Turning On Your Equilibrium Again

Posted by:gulf onDecember 12, 2016

Most of us have in one time or another, experienced that feeling of being off, of not being able to keep our balance, or feeling like the room is spinning. One of the most common causes of this condition is labrynthitis or vestibulitis, the inflammation of the inner ear. Equilibrium is a function of the inner ear and comes in two types:

  1. Static Equilibrium – a state of balance relative to the force of gravity and;
  2. Dynamic Equilibrium – involves the maintenance of balance during sudden movements

Balance disorders can wreak havoc in your life and can lead to increased risk for falls, shorter attention span or excessive fatigue. So how do you turn your balance back on? Practicing balance exercises are a good way to start, allowing you to stand still or hold your balance when moving without feeling sick or wobbly. Undergoing specific medical treatment is another. Take the example of astronaut John Glenn, who experienced balance problems that led to his disqualification from service. He was able to return to space at the age of 77 after being subjected to a rehabilitation program.

The Gulf Coast Audiology offers various diagnostic evaluation services as they aid their patients in finding solutions to their ear problems, which may include ear infections, ringing in the ear, and dizziness or vertigo. Some of the services include:

  • Diagnostic hearing evaluations
  • Hearing aid fitting and dispensing
  • Industrial hearing testing
  • Tympanometry
  • Acoustically evoked otoacousting emission (OAE) testing

Our brain is designed to process sounds from two ears. It cannot fully understand the signals if only one ear is functioning. Can you imagine how uncomfortable life would be if you are only able to hear from one ear or have hearing problems at a very early age? You may not be aware of it, but some of your daily habits can endanger your hearing health such as using cotton swabs, always getting stressed out, and medicating without a doctor’s prescription. Start protecting your ears and enjoy a life full of beautiful sounds!
